Another love I never lost my childhood yen for are shadowboxes and dioramas. Fanciful Creatures are box assemblages I create using a variety of materials including cigar boxes, wood trim, textiles, and paper—wallpaper, vintage book pages, maps, and decorative papers.
The anthropomorphic creatures are collage figures I create using imagery from my various sourcebooks which is another form of re-purposing by giving imagery from the 19th century a new life.
The series started with an exhibition I had at Playhouse on the Square. I used language from the financial sector as inspiration for several of the “financiers” in that series. Since then, they have morphed and grown in myriad situations, themes, allegories, and guises. They are charming, rich in detail, symbolic and delightful.
